Gaza ceasefire a 'deadly illusion': UNICEF

Geneva: UNICEF has condemned the ongoing ceasefire in Gaza as a ‘deadly illusion,’ reporting that 265 children have been killed since the agreement was supposedly established in October 2025.

Despite the ceasefire declaration, Israeli strikes have continued across the territory, resulting in at least 992 Palestinian deaths, according to data recognized by the United Nations.

UNICEF spokesman James Elder stated that these children were not killed in a war zone, but in their homes, schools, and while playing, with more than 400 additional children sustaining catastrophic injuries.

Beyond the physical toll, restrictions on essential medicines are exacerbating the suffering of wounded children, while profound trauma is devastating their ability to develop normally. Elder emphasized that the persistent loss of life is not due to a lack of options, but a failure of political will, urging the international community to stop "normalizing the abnormal".
