ROME: Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has cancelled his upcoming visit to the United States following reported comments by US President Donald Trump that mocked Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

Tajani, who was scheduled to visit on June 21 and 22, declared on X that Trump’s remarks were ‘grave and offensive’ and an insult to ‘the whole of Italy’.

The controversy stems from Trump's interview with the network La7, where he claimed Meloni ‘wanted a picture with me so badly’ at the G7, adding he only agreed because he ‘felt sorry for her’. Prime Minister Meloni stated she was ‘stunned’ by the insults.
