Bogota: Around 100 Colombian guerrillas have surrendered their guns as part of a peace pact with the country's leftist administration, marking another step in President Gustavo Petro's efforts to put an end to decades of violent warfare.

The fighters handed over their weapons as part of a negotiated agreement aimed at encouraging rebel factions to demobilise and reintegrate into civilian society. The government stated that the disarming shows progress in its larger ‘Total Peace’ plan, which seeks agreements with armed groups across the country.

Colombia has been embroiled in violence for more than six decades, involving guerrilla organisations, paramilitary groups, and criminal organisations. While earlier peace deals considerably reduced violence, some armed factions continue to operate in sections of the country.

Authorities expressed hope that the current disarmament will help restore security in impacted areas, however obstacles persist as the government negotiates with other armed groups.
