Washington DC: Iran's national football team has been granted visas to enter the United States ahead of the FIFA World Cup, ending weeks of uncertainty just days before the tournament begins.
US officials confirmed that visas had been issued for players and essential support staff, allowing Iran to participate in the competition. The approval comes only 10 days before Iran's opening match against New Zealand in Los Angeles.
The visa delays had forced Iran to shift its training base from Arizona to Mexico, while some team officials were reportedly still awaiting clearance as recently as last week.
The issue drew attention amid ongoing tensions between the US and Iran. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said individuals linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps would not be allowed entry, although several players have previously completed mandatory military service with the force.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, hosted by the US, Canada and Mexico, begins on 11 June.
