PARIS: Marjane Satrapi, the renowned Iranian-French cartoonist, filmmaker, and author of the acclaimed graphic novel Persepolis, has died at the age of 56. Her passing was confirmed by the French presidency and family members, who shared that she ‘died of sadness’ following the death of her husband, Mattias Ripa, last year.
Satrapi achieved global fame with Persepolis, a monochrome autobiographical memoir detailing her childhood during the 1979 Iranian Revolution. The subsequent animated film adaptation made Oscar history and won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival.
Throughout her life, Satrapi remained a fierce critic of Tehran’s clerical regime and a passionate advocate for democracy, freedom of expression, and women's rights. Tributes poured in from French leaders, including President Emmanuel Macron, honoring her legacy as an immense artist who transformed her personal history into a universal tale of freedom.
