Hundreds of Nigerian Teachers Protest Wave of School Kidnappings

Abuja: Hundreds of teachers across major Nigerian cities have staged protests following a surge in kidnappings and attacks targeting schools by armed groups.
The demonstrations come amid a series of mass abductions in recent months that have raised renewed concerns about insecurity in the country, particularly in northern and western regions.
In one of the latest incidents, gunmen abducted at least 46 pupils and staff from three schools in Oyo state last month. The Nigerian army said the attack was carried out by jihadists.
On the same day, another 42 people — including children as young as two — were taken from schools in Borno state in the northeast.
The crisis follows a string of large-scale school kidnappings in late 2025, including the abduction of around 24 schoolgirls in Kebbi state in November and nearly 300 students and several teachers in Niger state later that month.
The repeated attacks have sparked protests from educators and renewed international attention on insecurity affecting schools across Nigeria.
