Stockholm: According to recent research presented at the European Congress on Obesity, adults who gain significant weight later in life may have a significantly increased chance of being diagnosed with cancer.
Over 600,000 people's health records from youngsters to older age were examined in the study, which was headed by researchers from Lund University in Sweden. Results indicated that compared to individuals who maintained a healthy weight, those who were obese before the age of thirty were much more likely to develop a number of cancers.
Researchers found that women were 4.5 times more likely to get endometrial cancer, while men who became obese early in adulthood were up to five times more likely to develop liver cancer. Additionally, increased risks for kidney, colon, and pancreatic cancers are observed.
Long-term exposure to inflammation associated with obesity, hormonal changes, and raised insulin levels may raise the risk of cancer, according to the research.
The results, according to experts, emphasise the significance of maintaining a healthy weight throughout adulthood and caution that even modest weight gain over time may have harmful long-term health consequences.
