India Reveals First Look of Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train
India has unveiled the first visual design of its upcoming Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train, offering an early preview of the country’s first high-speed rail service ahead of its planned launch in 2027.
The aerodynamic train design was displayed at the Railway Ministry building in New Delhi, drawing attention to one of India’s largest transport infrastructure projects currently under development.
The 508-kilometre Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor is being developed by the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited using Japan’s Shinkansen technology, globally known for its speed, safety, and reliability.
Once operational, the bullet train is expected to reduce travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad to under two hours.
Officials said the first operational stretch between Ahmedabad and Vapi is targeted to open by August 2027, while the full corridor is expected to become operational by 2029.
India’s Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw previously stated that the initial phase of the project will cover around 100 kilometres.
The unveiling comes as construction work continues across the corridor, including tunnel excavation in Mumbai, where authorities recently lowered the first tunnel boring machine cutterhead at Vikhroli for underground works linked to the project.
Authorities say the high-speed rail network will significantly improve connectivity, tourism, and business travel across western India while further strengthening technology cooperation between India and Japan.
