Google Says Criminal Hackers Used A.I. to Find a Major Software Flaw

California: Google's Threat Intelligence Group (GTIG) recently achieved a landmark victory in digital defense by intercepting a massive cyberattack powered by the first-ever AI-generated zero-day exploit. 

The attack targeted a popular open-source system administration tool, utilizing an AI-crafted Python script specifically designed to bypass two-factor authentication (2FA).

Unlike traditional software bugs, this vulnerability stemmed from a high-level semantic logic flaw a type of error that is often invisible to traditional security scanners but easily identifiable by large language models (LLMs). 

Google researchers expressed ’high confidence’ that an AI model was used to both discover and weaponize the flaw, citing telltale signs such as ‘hallucinated’ severity scores and unusually structured code comments typical of machine training data.

While the exploit was thwarted before causing widespread damage, the incident confirms that AI has moved beyond experimentation into industrial-scale cyber-warfare. 

This watershed moment signals a new era where defense must match the speed and reasoning capabilities of AI-driven adversaries to secure global digital infrastructure.
