Taiwan vows to 'strengthen cooperation' with US for deterrence

Taipei: Taiwan announced Tuesday its commitment to bolstering security ties with the United States to maintain regional stability. The statement follows President Donald Trump’s recent remarks indicating that US arms sales to the island would be a topic of discussion during his high-profile visit to Beijing this week.
Foreign ministry spokesman Hsiao Kuang-wei emphasized during a regular briefing in Taipei that the democratic island intends to "strengthen cooperation" with its primary security backer. The objective is to build ‘effective deterrence capabilities’ aimed at preserving peace within the Taiwan Strait.
While the US remains Taiwan's most significant international supporter, the potential for arms sales to be used as a diplomatic lever in Beijing adds new weight to the relationship. Taipei maintains that these joint efforts are essential for regional security.
