Japan Confirms First Fatal Bear Attack of 2026 Amid Surge in Sightings

TOKYO: Japan's environment ministry confirmed on Friday the first fatal bear attack of 2026, involving a 55-year-old woman in the northern Iwate prefecture. This confirmation comes as authorities investigate two additional suspected fatalities discovered this week in the Iwate and Yamagata regions.

One victim, identified as 69-year-old Chiyoko Kumagai, was found with severe head and face injuries consistent with an animal's claws after she went missing while gathering wild plants.

The recent spike in encounters follows a devastating 2025, which saw a record 13 deaths and over 200 injuries caused by bears. Local media reports indicate that sightings in some northern prefectures this April were nearly four times higher than the previous year.

Experts suggest that a ‘warming climate’ and an abundance of food have caused bear populations to thrive and double over the last three decades, leading to ‘overcrowding’ in their natural mountain habitats.

As the animals emerge from hibernation, they are increasingly straying into human settlements, supermarkets, and resorts. Koji Yamazaki, a leading bear expert, noted that depopulation and abandoned farmland in rural areas have made it easier for bears to wander closer to residents.

While black bears on Honshu are responsible for most attacks, officials are deploying hunters to patrol high-risk areas to prevent further tragedies.
