Three Killed as Mount Dukono Volcano Erupts in Indonesia

Three hikers, two Singaporeans and a local died Friday during an eruption of Indonesia’s Mount Dukono on Halmahera island. The eruption, which began at 7:42 am, sent a massive ash cloud 10 kilometers into the atmosphere.
While 15 other climbers from the group managed to descend safely, the bodies of the three victims remain on the mountain as continued volcanic activity has made recovery efforts too dangerous for emergency teams.
Police officials stated that the hikers had entered a four-kilometer prohibited radius around the Malupang Warirang Crater, ignoring physical warning signs and digital alerts issued since December.
Investigators noted that foreign tourists often enter these restricted zones to create social media content. Consequently, the group's guide and a porter could face criminal charges for leading the trek into the no-go area. Residents in the nearby city of Tobelo have been advised to stay vigilant for volcanic ash rain as the volcano remains at alert level two.
