Bogotá: Nine miners were killed on Monday following a fatal explosion at a coal mine in the Sutatausa municipality of central Colombia. The disaster, which occurred approximately 72 kilometers north of Bogotá, was attributed to a buildup of gases within the facility.
While early reports suggested more individuals were trapped, the National Mining Agency confirmed a final toll of nine deceased and six miners successfully rescued.
Although this particular site was a legally operated mine, authorities noted that mining accidents are frequent in the region due to poor ventilation and the presence of makeshift or illegal operations that ignore safety standards.
Governor Jorge Emilio Rey coordinated the emergency response, which included assessing gas levels to ensure the safety of rescue workers at the entrance.
