Two Dead, One Critical After Respiratory Illness Outbreak on Atlantic Cruise

A suspected outbreak of a severe respiratory illness aboard a cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean has left two people dead and another in critical condition, health authorities confirmed.

The cases were linked to a voyage by the MV Hondius, which was travelling between South America and West Africa. Officials said the affected passengers developed symptoms while on board, prompting emergency medical responses during the journey.

One patient currently receiving treatment in Johannesburg has tested positive for a hantavirus, a group of viruses known to cause serious respiratory and other illnesses. Health experts note that such viruses are typically transmitted through contact with infected rodents or contaminated environments.

The World Health Organization confirmed it is monitoring the situation, adding that investigations are underway as part of a coordinated international public health response.

Authorities said the first reported case involved an elderly passenger who fell ill during the voyage and later died. A second individual, who had also shown symptoms, passed away after being transferred for medical care. A third patient remains in intensive care.

Additional precautionary measures are being considered for other passengers who reported symptoms, including possible isolation and further medical evaluation at upcoming ports of call.

The vessel, which carries both passengers and crew on long-distance expeditions, had been making scheduled stops along the route when the incident occurred.

Health officials continue to investigate the source of the outbreak and assess potential risks to others on board, while international coordination efforts remain ongoing.
