Sydney: A former U.S. Marine pilot, Daniel Duggan, has lost his appeal against extradition from Australia to the United States over charges linked to training Chinese pilots.

Duggan, who is now an Australian citizen, was arrested in 2022 in New South Wales at the request of U.S. authorities after returning from China, where he had lived for several years. In 2024, Australia approved his extradition to the U.S.

He challenged the decision, arguing that legal errors were made and that his actions were not considered a crime in Australia at the time. However, a judge of the Federal Court of Australia dismissed his appeal, finding no issues with the extradition process.

Duggan will remain in custody in Australia until he is handed over to U.S. authorities. His family has expressed disappointment and may file another appeal within 28 days.

The United States has charged him with four offences, including conspiracy to violate arms export laws, illegal arms dealings, and money laundering. Some of these charges carry potential prison sentences of up to 20 years.
