SOFIA: Bulgaria is set to hold its eighth general election in five years this weekend, a snap vote many hope will finally stabilize the EU’s poorest member state. The frontrunner is former air force general and ex-president Rumen Radev, whose new center-left coalition, Progressive Bulgaria, is currently polling at approximately 30 percent. Radev, who resigned the presidency earlier this year, has centered his campaign on dismantling the country's oligarchic governance model.’

However, his candidacy is marked by controversy regarding foreign policy. Radev has frequently criticized EU stances on the Green Deal and military aid to Ukraine, instead advocating for restored ties with Russia. His primary rival, the conservative GERB party, maintains a staunchly pro-EU and pro-Ukraine position.

To ensure election integrity, Bulgarian authorities have arrested over 200 individuals in raids targeting widespread vote-buying. As Sofia battles disinformation and chronic instability, the outcome will determine if Radev can secure enough seats to form a functional government.
