Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: Amnesty condemns Malaysia for detaining Rohingya asylum seekers after authorities rounded up more than 100 Rohingya refugees and asylum seekers at a UN refugee agency facility in Kuala Lumpur, prompting renewed criticism over the country's treatment of displaced people.
Amnesty International said the detentions undermine efforts to build a credible refugee protection system and urged Malaysia to uphold the rights and dignity of those seeking safety.
The Rohingya had travelled to the UNHCR compound after reportedly facing eviction from an informal settlement in Penang. Police detained 110 men, women and children before later transferring them to a location managed by a non-governmental organisation.
Malaysia hosts more than 215,000 registered refugees and asylum seekers, including over 126,000 Rohingya, but has not signed the 1951 Refugee Convention, leaving many vulnerable to arrest, detention and deportation.
