AI matchmaking fuels hundreds of marriages in Japan

Tokyo: In Japan, artificial intelligence is emerging as an innovative matchmaker, assisting hundreds of couples in marrying as the country struggles with declining marriage rates and an ageing population. Local governments, in collaboration with private matchmaking firms, have adopted AI-powered systems that assess users' personalities, values, interests, hobbies, and lifestyle choices to recommend compatible matches.

The app officially launched in September 2024, after a government survey revealed that roughly 70% of those interested in marriage were not actively looking for mates. To ensure that users are actually looking for marriage, applicants must authenticate their identification, prove that they are legally unmarried, provide income-related documents as required, and undergo an online interview before joining. Instead than depending just on age or occupation, the AI considers personality traits, values, hobbies, and compatibility when recommending potential matches.

According to authorities, technology has encouraged more people, especially younger persons and those who are reluctant to utilise traditional dating services to participate in organised matchmaking programs.

Many cities have reported an increase in successful matches and weddings since implementing AI-assisted services, which they see as part of larger efforts to address Japan's demographic challenge. The government has backed measures aimed at improving marriage possibilities, with the hope that they may help reverse the country's persistently low birth rate.

While experts emphasise that AI cannot form relationships on its own, they do believe it can reduce some of the obstacles of finding appropriate mates by making introductions personalised and efficient. Participants continue to meet in person and decide whether to seek a relationship, with AI serving solely as a tool to better the matchmaking process.
