Honiara: Ten families are still waiting for news of missing relatives after a landslide at the Gold Ridge mine in the Solomon Islands, where at least 10 bodies have been recovered and search efforts are continuing.
The landslide struck the open-pit mine on Guadalcanal, burying people believed to be informal gold prospectors rather than employees of the mining company. Police, emergency crews and local residents are continuing to search through mud and rock for anyone still trapped.
Families of the missing have joined the recovery effort, using limited equipment to search the debris. The mining company said the incident involved a localised slope collapse and that no company employees were injured.
Authorities have yet to confirm the final death toll as recovery operations continue, while local leaders have renewed warnings against unauthorised mining in active pit areas following the tragedy.
