LIMA: The Peruvian presidential election has entered a critical phase following the first round of voting. Right-wing candidate Keiko Fujimori has declared the initial results a victory over her leftist ‘enemy’, as data indicates she is the frontrunner to advance to a second-round runoff.

Despite her lead, Fujimori currently remains well below the 50 percent threshold necessary to secure the presidency outright, ensuring that a subsequent vote will be required to determine the final winner.

The race for the second spot in the runoff remains highly competitive. Exit polls and partial counts show a statistical tie among trailing candidates, with far-right contender Rafael ‘Porky’ Lopez Aliaga demonstrating significant strength. This narrow margin between the remaining candidates leaves the identity of Fujimori’s eventual opponent uncertain as the final ballots are processed.

Fujimori, the daughter of former president Alberto Fujimori, has positioned her campaign as a direct challenge to leftist political movements within the nation. As Peru awaits the official confirmation of the results, the focus shifts toward the upcoming runoff, which will ultimately decide the country's executive leadership.
