Catholic pilgrimage site desecrated in Bosnia after vandals defaced a revered Marian shrine and set fire to a nearby outdoor altar, just days before more than 50,000 young pilgrims are expected to arrive for an annual prayer gathering.
Police have launched an investigation after worshippers reported offensive graffiti and the fire at the Medjugorje shrine, one of the world's best-known Catholic pilgrimage destinations.
The attackers sprayed black paint across the statue of the Virgin Mary and left insulting messages, while security footage reportedly showed a man setting the altar ablaze. Despite the damage, church authorities confirmed that the annual gathering will proceed as planned, with repairs already underway.
The parish urged believers to respond with prayer, fasting and forgiveness. The Vatican formally recognised the shrine in 2024, further strengthening its global religious significance.
