Accra, Ghana: IMF releases final tranche of Ghana's $3 bn bailout after approving a final disbursement of about $371 million, bringing the country's three-year financial support programme to a close.
The International Monetary Fund said Ghana's economic performance under the programme was broadly satisfactory, citing stronger public finances, higher foreign reserves and significant progress in restructuring debt.
Ghana sought IMF assistance in 2022 after soaring inflation, mounting debt and a weakening currency pushed the economy into crisis. Approved in 2023, the $3 billion bailout helped stabilise the economy through fiscal reforms and debt restructuring.
Although the central bank missed one programme target by exceeding lending limits to the government, the IMF granted a waiver. Ghana will now transition to a Policy Coordination Instrument, allowing it to continue economic reforms and strengthen investor confidence without receiving additional IMF funding.
