Yasmin Ullah Leads Genocide Case, Urges Muslim World to Act Against Myanmar Junta

Jakarta: A Rohingya rights campaigner, Yasmin Ullah, is leading a genocide complaint in Indonesia against Myanmar’s president-elect Min Aung Hlaing, calling on the Muslim world to take a stronger stand against the military regime.

The case, filed under Indonesia’s universal jurisdiction law, accuses Myanmar’s leadership of serious human rights abuses against the Rohingya minority. Activists chose Indonesia due to its position as the world’s largest Muslim-majority country and its influence within Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

Ullah urged regional leaders to act, saying, “I’m really imploring the leadership… to think about the future we want. If we want stability and prosperity, we need to address the root cause—Myanmar’s military.”

Myanmar’s military seized power in 2021 and has long been accused of targeting ethnic minorities, particularly the Rohingya. A brutal crackdown in 2017 forced more than a million people to flee, many seeking refuge in neighbouring countries.

Despite global criticism, Myanmar’s leaders deny wrongdoing and maintain their actions were aimed at countering militancy.

Indonesia continues to host thousands of Rohingya refugees, many of whom arrived after dangerous journeys by sea. Conditions remain difficult, with limited resources and declining international aid.

Ullah also criticised regional inaction, warning that continued trade and engagement with Myanmar reflects a “business as usual” approach that fails to hold the junta accountable.

The complaint is now under review by Indonesian authorities, marking a significant step in efforts to seek justice. The case also comes as Indonesia prepares to assume the presidency of the United Nations Human Rights Council in 2026, placing added focus on its role in addressing global human rights issues.
