Italy says Israeli forces damage UN convoy vehicle in Lebanon

ROME: The Italian government has issued a formal protest after Israeli military fire damaged a vehicle belonging to a United Nations convoy in southern Lebanon on Wednesday. The incident involved the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), a peacekeeping mission that included a significant contingent of Italian troops stationed along the ‘Blue Line’ separating Israel and Lebanon.
According to reports from the Italian Ministry of Defense, the UN convoy was traveling on a pre-cleared route when it came under fire from Israeli forces. While no peacekeepers were injured in the attack, at least one vehicle sustained significant structural damage. Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto characterized the incident as ‘unacceptable’ and ‘a violation of international law,’ demanding an immediate explanation from Israeli military leadership.
The strike occurs amidst a period of extreme regional volatility. While a 14-day ceasefire is currently in effect between the United States and Iran, Israel has explicitly stated that the truce does not extend to its operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon. On Wednesday alone, Israeli strikes across Lebanon resulted in nearly 200 deaths, as the military continues its intensive campaign to push Hezbollah forces back from its northern border.
UNIFIL officials have repeatedly warned that the safety of peacekeepers is being compromised by the escalating intensity of the conflict. This latest incident adds to a series of confrontations between the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and UN personnel over the past several months, further straining diplomatic relations between Israel and the European nations contributing to the peacekeeping mission.
