HAVANA: The Cuban government has announced the pardon of 2,010 prisoners as a ‘humanitarian’ gesture to mark the Easter holiday. This decision follows a previous pledge to release dozens of individuals amid increased diplomatic pressure from the United States.
According to a statement read on state television, the group includes young people, women, and prisoners over 60 years old who were already scheduled for release within the next six months to a year.
The government specified that the selection process involved a ‘careful analysis’ of the crimes committed, the inmates' conduct during their sentences, and their current health status.
While the list includes some foreigners and Cuban citizens residing abroad, no specific identities have been disclosed. This move comes shortly after an earlier announcement to free 51 prisoners as a gesture of ‘goodwill’ toward the Vatican, which frequently acts as a mediator between Havana and Washington.
