BRUSSELS: UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has called on Iran to stop attacks against Gulf states following a series of strikes on regional energy facilities. Speaking at the European Council in Brussels, the secretary-general warned of escalating global risks and urged an end to hostilities as the Middle East conflict continues to escalate.

Guterres called on all parties to choose diplomacy over war to safeguard civilians and prevent wider economic and humanitarian consequences. “Stop attacking your neighbours. They were never parties to the conflict,” Mr. Guterres said. He emphasized that diplomacy must prevail over war to prevent the conflict from "getting completely out of control".

The Secretary General also addressed the global impact of the prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz, noting it has caused “so much pain” to people worldwide due to soaring energy prices. He stated that these individuals "have nothing to do with this conflict".

Mr. Guterres further called on the US and Israel to end the war, warning of the wider consequences of continued fighting. He stressed that the "force of the law" must prevail over the law of force to safeguard civilians and ensure international peace and security.
