Paris: A French soldier was killed and several others were injured in a drone attack in the Erbil Region, according to Emmanuel Macron, President of France.
Macron identified the fallen soldier as Arnaud Frion, a Chief Warrant Officer, marking the first French military fatality since the war involving Iran began late last month.
In a message posted on social media, Macron expressed condolences to the soldier’s family and fellow troops. “To his family and to his brothers in arms, I want to express all the affection and solidarity of the nation,” he said.
The president also confirmed that several French soldiers were wounded in the attack and said France stands with them and their families during this time.
Macron strongly condemned the strike on French forces deployed in Iraq, describing it as “unacceptable.” French troops in the region are part of international efforts to combat Islamic State.
He stressed that their mission is strictly focused on counter-terrorism and warned that the ongoing conflict involving Iran cannot be used to justify attacks on French forces operating in Iraq.
