India Suspends TV News Ratings Over Sensational Iran War Coverage
India has temporarily halted television ratings for all news channels after authorities raised concerns over sensational reporting related to the escalating conflict involving Iran. The move aims to promote responsible broadcasting during a delicate international crisis.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has instructed the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) to suspend the publication of Television Rating Points (TRPs) for a period of four weeks or until further notice.
Officials said the decision came after some broadcasters aired “speculative and exaggerated coverage” about the ongoing conflict involving Israel, Iran, and the United States, which authorities warned could unnecessarily alarm viewers.
The ministry cited “Clause 24.2 of the 2014 Policy Guidelines for Television Rating Agencies,” which empowers the government to direct rating agencies in matters concerning public interest.
