New Delhi: Indian authorities have ordered a British couple to leave the country after accusing them of violating tourist visa rules by engaging in political activity in the western state of Rajasthan.

State police said the couple, identified as Lewis Gabriel D and Anushi Emma Christine, pasted “Free Palestine” stickers in multiple locations across Pushkar, a popular temple town that attracts large numbers of Israeli tourists.

According to police, authorities received a report on January 21 alleging that the tourists had displayed stickers reading “Free Palestine” and “Boycott Israel” in public places.

Additional Superintendent of Police Rajesh Meena said the couple’s actions breached the conditions of a tourist visa, which prohibits political activities. He told local media that the couple had been served a notice under the Immigration and Foreigners Act of 2025, their visas revoked, and they were instructed to leave India immediately.

“Our watch on the activities of foreign nationals is very strict,” Meena said, adding that violations could result in deportation and future blacklisting.

Pushkar is a well-known destination for Israeli travellers, particularly those visiting India after completing military service. Local media reports estimate that nearly 2,000 Israeli nationals are currently in the town, with many frequenting establishments linked to Chabad, a global Jewish movement.

Calls to “Free Palestine” have intensified globally since Israel launched its military offensive on Gaza in October 2023, which has killed more than 71,000 Palestinians, according to local authorities. The war followed a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel that killed around 1,200 people and saw 251 hostages taken.

India has avoided direct criticism of Israel during the conflict, even as bilateral ties have strengthened under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Israel has become one of India’s largest arms suppliers, and Mr Modi is expected to visit Israel later this month, according to Israeli officials.

At the same time, India has reiterated its long-standing support for a two-state solution in international forums.
