At least one person has been killed and several others injured after an explosion ripped through Moscow’s Central Children’s Store on Sunday, according to Russian state media.
The blast struck inside the iconic landmark—still widely remembered by Russians as the “Detsky Mir” toy store—located on Lubyanka Square, close to the headquarters of the Federal Security Service (FSB).
“Sadly, according to preliminary information, there has been one fatality and several people injured,” Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed in a statement.
Emergency services quickly evacuated the building, which contains multiple shops, restaurants, and a cinema. Photos and videos from the scene showed police cordoning off the area as investigators began their work.
While initial reports suggested a gas cylinder caused the blast, the Telegram channel Mash claimed that a helium canister may have been responsible. Authorities have yet to verify that account.
The Central Children’s Store, one of Moscow’s most visited landmarks, remains closed as officials continue their investigation.
