President Donald Trump announced plans to establish food centers in Gaza in a bid to address the worsening hunger crisis in the war-stricken region. Speaking during a joint appearance with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Scotland, Trump emphasized the humanitarian priority of feeding civilians, especially children, before taking any political steps.
“We're going to set up food centers where people can walk in—no fences, no barriers,” Trump said. “We just want to get food to the people who need it most.”
The president revealed that the U.S. has already committed $60 million toward food assistance and is working with European Union President Ursula von der Leyen to coordinate broader international support. He noted that several other countries have also expressed willingness to contribute.
Trump admitted concerns about aid falling into the wrong hands, including Hamas, but maintained that helping innocent civilians must come first. “We hope the food reaches those who really need it,” he said.
On the issue of hostages still held in Gaza, Trump acknowledged the difficulty of negotiating for their release. “We were able to get many out, but the last group is the hardest. They’re used as shields,” he explained, adding that this has slowed down progress toward peace.
While Trump praised the efforts of Israeli leaders and ongoing cooperation with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, he said that finding a solution is complicated by the continued presence of hostages and deep-rooted tensions in the region.
Despite the complex situation in Gaza, Trump stressed the importance of addressing humanitarian needs immediately. “Before anything else—before politics or peace talks—we must feed the children. That’s the priority,” he concluded.
The U.S. food centers in Gaza are expected to be set up in partnership with allied nations, with open access and no physical barriers. According to Trump, the goal is to allow people to access essential supplies without delay or obstruction.
“This is about compassion,” he said. “And we’re ready to lead that effort.”
