Aluminium Bahrain B.S.C. Begins Controlled Shutdown of Three Reduction Lines
Aluminium Bahrain B.S.C. (Alba), the world’s largest aluminium smelter operating on a single site, has initiated a controlled and safe shutdown of Reduction Lines 1, 2 and 3 as a precautionary operational measure.
The temporary shutdown affects approximately 19 percent of Alba’s total annual production capacity of 1.623 million metric tonnes. The company said the decision was taken to preserve business continuity amid ongoing supply and transit disruptions impacting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the company, the targeted shutdown will allow Alba to optimise the use of its available raw material inventory and maintain operational stability by concentrating production on Reduction Lines 4, 5 and 6, which remain fully operational.
By prioritising raw material allocation to its most sustainable operating configuration, Alba aims to maintain production resilience, manage working capital efficiently and explore alternative supply options to reduce exposure to short-term supply volatility.
The company will also utilise the shutdown period to conduct planned asset care and maintenance activities for the affected lines. This includes cleaning, inspection and other housekeeping measures designed to maintain equipment integrity and ensure the lines are ready for a safe restart once conditions improve.
Alba emphasised that the shutdown is being carried out in a controlled manner to minimise health, safety, environmental and operational risks while safeguarding the long-term performance of its facilities.
The company said it will continue to closely monitor the situation and provide updates as needed, while working with suppliers and customers to manage commitments and minimise potential disruptions.
Alba added that the safety of its employees and contractors, the protection of its assets, and reliable supply to customers remain its top priorities.
