Bahrain’s shrimp industry is gearing up for a potential surge in demand after the holy month of Ramadan, and local producers aim to ramp up production to meet this anticipated demand. The process starts with importing live seeds (post-larvae) from hatcheries by air transport.

Then, the shrimp are cultured in tanks for three to four months, depending on the desired size. Once they reach the preferred size, the shrimp are harvested and packed in styrofoam boxes for delivery.

The prime season for shrimp farming falls between April and December, presenting a window of opportunity for the industry. Prices are expected to fluctuate based on size, with estimates suggesting a range of BD3.5 to BD5 during the ban period and BD2 to BD4 during the non-ban period.

“The weather in Bahrain is basically the ideal condition for shrimp farming,” said Ahmed Sami Sayar, General Manager of Gulf Fish Aquarium, in an interview with The Daily Tribune. “The water temperature (with a maximum of 38 degrees) is perfect for shrimp growth.”

Ahmed highlighted the crucial role of government support in establishing the first shrimp farm in the Kingdom, particularly with the allocation of land for shrimp farming. This support has empowered local producers to expand their operations and contribute to Bahrain’s economic diversification efforts.

Ambitious goal

Local producers are setting their sights on supplying the international market, specifically targeting neighbouring GCC countries in the future. This ambitious goal requires increased production capacity and potentially exploring export opportunities.

“Our priority is to ensure food security and increase productivity in the shrimp business. Our long-term vision is to become a leading player in the shrimp industry,” Sayar said. “By leveraging government support and optimising production strategies, we believe we can achieve this goal and contribute significantly to Bahrain’s economic standing.”

The success of the local shrimp industry hinges on several factors, including maintaining high-quality standards, establishing efficient distribution channels, and potentially venturing into value-added products.

With a combination of strategic planning and continued government support, Bahrain’s shrimp industry has the potential to not only meet domestic needs but also carve a niche for itself in the international market.
