167 road development projects done this year

The Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry has focused much on development and maintenance of road networks in all governorates of the Kingdom in order to improve traffic condition and reduce accidents this year.

The Ministry has implemented various projects in the Southern governorate in cooperation with the municipality council to set priorities in road construction and maintenance.

Roads Assistant Undersecretary of the Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs & Urban Planning and Chairman of the Municipal Councils Coordination & Follow-up Committee, Huda Fakhro, said that 167 development projects had been completed in the Southern 

Governorate this year alone. She pointed out that the road work included building parking spaces, pavements, new road entries and safety barriers, which all added up to 105 projects. These projects have been distributed to  different departments based on the traffic safety measures required.

The most important road projects were launched in Isa Town of the Southern Governorate in Beirut Street Road, 702, Khartoum Street, Algeria Street, Tunisia, and the projects underway in Damascus and Cairo Street.

In East Riffa, street 39 and road 3409, Riffa Street entrance road 1329 along with surrounding roads have been constructed. The ministry also developed an intersection of Shaikh Mohammed Street and roads 213 to 1023 to develop blocks 902 to 904 in West Riffa. The Jaw blocks of 965 to 960 have been built and a side road was constructed in King Hamad Street leading to Jaw and Askar in addition to road developments in Nuwaidrat, Shaikh Khalifa Street, Ansari mosque compound, Naseem school, Jazi Mosque and many more other roads.

The Ministry established a number of car parks in different parts of the southern governorate in order to increase the capacity of the streets and roads in the heavily-populated neighbourhoods, where traffic regulation is the need of the hour.

Huda Fakhro also said the ministry had received 62 requests from the council to install speed bumps and 116 speed bumps were installed in the governorate.

She stressed that the Ministry’s focus was hassle- free transportation between various regions in the Kingdom ensuring safety of travellers.
