Gothenburg festival celebrates Bahraini, Saudi poetry in style

The Gothenburg Poetry Festival i Sweden has celebrated Bahrain and Saudi poetry with a selection of three female poets from each country. The works of the poets were translated with the cooperation of Swedish poets and then recited during the festival between October 27 and November 2.

Poets Muna Al Saffar, Ranwa Nabhan and Dhuha Al Mosajen represented Bahrain while Huda Al Mubarak, Ruqaya Al Fareed and Hilda Ismail represented Saudi Arabia.

Swedish poets Sara Anaya, Ida Burgil, Sarah Hallstrom, Balsam Karam and Eman Mohammed helped translate their works. A shared reading session was held within closed workshops earlier in Manama to translate the works in a pure poetic sense.

The works were published, accompanied by critical readings in poetic experiences, on the cover of a Swedish periodical with Bahraini artist Mariam Haji on the cover.

The festival had a diverse set of activities during which the poets presented their poetry with open discussions with Arab and Swedish audience present in the event.

They also had open meetings and discussions conducted that included writers’ union in Stockholm and a number of cultural centres in Gothenburg as well with students from the writing school in the city Biskops Arno.
