7,700 volunteers for vaccine trials

TDT | Manama

Bahrain has reached its target of 7,700 volunteers for the phase three clinical trials for a potential coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine after adminis- tering additional 1,700 trials yesterday, the Health Ministry announced. Also yesterday, National Taskforce for Combating Coronavirus (COVID-19) monitoring committee head Lt Col Dr Manaf Al Qahtani called on more volunteers to step forward and join the trial for the sake of “human ity”.

Dr Manaf added that the vaccine trial continues to welcome volunteers at the Bahrain International Exhibition and Convention Centre between 8am and 8pm. Participants must pass a health assessment and be willing to be monitored for a year.

The additional 1,700 slots were announced after achieving the desired goal of 6,000 volunteers in September.

Health Minister Faeeqa bint Saeed Al Saleh hailed the volun- teers being a “source of pride” as the Kingdom completed the scheduled phase.

The Kingdom announced its participation in the third phase of clinical trials in August, and yesterday, it achieved its target of reaching 7,700 participants.

Volunteers must receive the second dose three weeks after the first dose, and they will be followed up by the medical team for 12 months.

The Taskforce yesterday held a press conference at the Crown Prince Centre for Training and Medical Research at the Bahrain Defence Force Hospital, to pro- vide an update on the COVID-19 response in the Kingdom.

The Taskforce highlighted the importance of supporting national efforts aimed at combatting the spread of the COVID-19 by fully observing health and social distancing guidelines, which include wearing face masks when out in public, and limiting gath- erings with individuals outside of one’s household until 14 October.

The Taskforce underscored that the health and safety of the Kingdom’s community remains a top priority.
