'You are no Shia power'

Nuclear deal with Iran is concerned with only one aspect of the multifaceted problems. It’s not going to work unless Iran mends its demeanour and settles issues with neighbouring countries, said Minister of Foreign Affairs Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa yesterday. |
He was speaking in a conference on “The prospects of peace in the region and ways to achieve it” at IPI MENA office here. Former President of Turkey Abdullah Gull was the keynote speaker.
He said that to undermine the security of the gulf region, explosives were being smuggled into Bahrain and other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. “It is very unfortunate that policemen are becoming the their target.”
“We need to deal with the extremism and all other diseases which are eating out our society,” said the Foreign Minister. He remarked that it was Iran’s responsibility to solve their problems on their own. “Otherwise, they would be serving the interests of someone who has nothing to do with the region.”
Citing lack of clarity in the statements from Iranian side, he commented: “If one or two of their leaders speak about good relations with the GCC, the others start speaking otherwise.”
“If Iran comes a step forward, we would move two steps forward,” he stressed.
Commenting that Iran is not being considered as the Shia power, he said, “Here in our country, Shia and Sunnis live together.”
Shaikh Khalid said that there was no room for any identity other than the national identity and they needed to overcome the thinking of non-national identity. “Iran is trying to gain its political ambitions in the name of religion, which is not fair at all,” he added.
