A driver was fined BD2,000 after crashing into a pavement, road sign and tree while driving under the influence of alcohol on Zallaq Highway.

The court found the defendant guilty of drink-driving, damaging public property and failing to drive with due care and attention.

According to court proceedings, the driver lost control of his vehicle before colliding with the pavement, an advisory traffic sign and a tree, causing significant damage.

The vehicle suffered damage to its front, rear and left side, while the pavement, road sign and tree were also damaged in the crash.

The defendant appeared in court through his lawyer, who requested leniency.

The Public Prosecution charged him under Bahrain’s Traffic Law No. 23 of 2014, as amended.

The court said the charges were supported by the defendant’s confession, the traffic accident report and the results of an alcohol test.

During questioning, the defendant admitted he had been driving while drunk and lost control of the vehicle, leading to the collision and damage to public property.

Tests conducted by the Interior Ministry’s health centre found 91 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres in his sample.

Traffic investigators concluded that the crash was caused by the defendant driving under the influence and failing to exercise proper care behind the wheel.

The court treated the offences as one connected crime and imposed a single penalty, fining the defendant BD2,000.
