Redirection of subsidies should not affect meal prices, says MP
Manama
The removal of subsidy on meat products should not affect the prices of food services in the country, a lawmaker informed yesterday.
According to MP Adel Al Assoomy, who is also the head of the parliamentary committee assigned to study the redirection of subsidies, the increase of meat prices in local markets would not affect meal prices in restaurants and hotels.
“Subsidised products are only directed to benefit citizens, not hotels. Even if some of those establishments are following twisted methods and are purchasing subsidised products, their profit will not increase much,” Al Assoomy said.
He explained, “If meals are sold for BD10 or more, an increase of BD2 will not harm the profit of the hotel or restaurant.”
The MP added, “We enjoy a free economy and prices are the concern of hotels and restaurants, yet, if there is any unjustified increase in meals prices, it’s in the hands of consumers to boycott such outlets and force them to reconsider their pricing policy.”
However, Al Assoomy ruled out the idea that restaurants and hotels are benefiting from subsidised products.
