Revamped central market now ‘4 times’ bigger, to open soon

The revamped Muharraq central market will be reopened to the public by the end of this month. According to Muharraq municipal council chairman Mohammed Al Sinan, the project has nearly been completed pending some ‘finishing touches’.   The revamped project, with three floors, is now four times bigger than the old market.

A hypermarket as well as over a hundred meat, fish and vegetable outlets will be featured in the revamped market on a total surface of 28000sqm.  In April, His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa had instructed to open Muharraq Central Market to the public before the end of the year. “The central market project is an important one. It will boost trade activity in the area and add convenience to the people as well as assist in job creation.

The project went smoothly and now we are in the final stages,” Al Sinan said. “Works have been completed, there are some final touches and final confirmation remaining. It will hopefully open before the end of this month.” He further pointed that the market apart from being bigger has been designed with customer convenience in focus. An underground parking was built to ensure ample parking space.

“This market will be of great value to the people and will offer an excellent shopping experience,” he added. The first floor is set aside for outlets for vegetables, meat and fish. All shops have already been handed over.  Meanwhile, it was announced that a new central market is being planned in Hamad Town.

Tenders for the project located near roundabout 17 has already been invited. Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Minister Essam Khalaf confirmed earlier this month that designs for the project have been completed.
