Lima: A minibus fell into a ravine in Peru's northern Cajamarca area, killing approximately 14 passengers and injuring five others, according to local authorities on Thursday. The collision happened on a hilly road in the San Juan district, and rescue teams responded to the scene.

Officials stated that rescue crews worked for several hours to recover the victims and assist the injured. The five survivors were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, as recovery efforts continued in the rough landscape.

Authorities have initiated an inquiry to ascertain the cause of the collision. Preliminary investigations did not say whether mechanical failure, speeding, or poor road conditions contributed to the tragedy.

Road accidents continue to be major concern in Peru, particularly in remote mountainous locations where curving roads, tough driving conditions and poor infrastructure raise the risk of fatal deaths. The latest incident follows a string of fatal traffic accidents reported around the country in recent years.
