Pyongyang: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has met with a senior Chinese official in Pyongyang, pledging to deepen bilateral ties. The diplomatic meeting took place on Thursday, July 15, 2026, as both neighboring nations marked the 65th anniversary of their 1961 mutual defense treaty.
Welcoming Wang Huning, a member of China's Communist Party Politburo Standing Committee, Kim declared that developing friendly relations is his nation's ‘steadfast policy.’ In response, Wang vowed that Beijing’s unwavering support for North Korean socialism would remain completely unchanged.
The high-profile meeting follows a rare visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to North Korea last month. It also comes as Pyongyang rapidly expands its military and security cooperation with Russia, having recently sent both soldiers and ammunition to Moscow.
Despite North Korea's growing military alignment with Russia, China remains its most critical economic partner. Beijing account for nearly 98 percent of North Korea's entire foreign trade as of 2024, underlining the dependency.
