Philippines Condemns China’s ‘Racist’ AI Video Over South China Sea Dispute

Manila : The Philippines has condemned an AI-generated video published by China Daily that portrays the country as a frightened monkey being pushed into a confrontation with China by the United States and Japan.

The video shows a monkey wearing a Filipino shirt being forced onto a boat-mounted karaoke stage by figures carrying US and Japanese flags. It later displays a reference to the South China Sea arbitration ruling before being thrown into the sea and hit by a water cannon.

The Philippine government called the video 'dehumanising', 'racist' and 'contemptible propaganda', and demanded its removal. Manila said the imagery could further deepen mistrust between the two countries.

The video was released as tensions remain high over competing claims in the South China Sea. The Philippines and China have had repeated confrontations around areas including the Spratly Islands and Scarborough Shoal, with Chinese vessels accused of using powerful water cannons against Philippine boats.

The dispute has also intensified around a 2016 international arbitration ruling that rejected China's broad claims over the South China Sea. Beijing has refused to accept the ruling, arguing that the tribunal had no authority to decide the case.

The latest controversy has added to growing tensions between Manila and Beijing, with both sides accusing the other of provocative actions at sea. The Philippines also protested after China recently placed a floating barrier near Scarborough Shoal, which was later removed.
