The Fifth High Criminal Court of Appeal has ordered a 46-year-old Bahraini woman convicted in a drug case to be admitted to a psychiatric hospital to determine whether she was legally responsible for her actions at the time of the offences.
The decision followed a request by her lawyer, Dalal Al Thawadi, after an initial medical report found that the woman suffers from bipolar disorder and recommended further psychiatric evaluation. She had previously been sentenced to 10 years in prison, fined BD5,000 and ordered to forfeit the seized drugs after being convicted of importing marijuana for trafficking and possessing hashish for personal use.
According to court records, customs officers intercepted a parcel from a European country addressed to the woman, discovering around 194 grams of marijuana concealed inside food items. Investigators later found suspected hashish, rolling papers and a digital scale during a search of her home, while a drug-filled cigarette was recovered from her car.
Prosecutors said the woman admitted collecting the package on behalf of an Asian man in exchange for 30 grams of hashish for personal use and also confessed to using and purchasing the drug from the same individual. Laboratory tests confirmed the seized substances were marijuana and hashish, while her urine sample tested positive for cannabis.
The appeal court will consider the psychiatric report before proceeding further with the case.
