Beijing: Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Friday that artificial intelligence (AI) should not be the exclusive property of any single country, calling the international community to collaborate to guarantee that the technology is developed and managed fairly and equally.
In a written message to the opening of the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai, Xi described AI as a transformational technology that is altering businesses, economies, and societies. He emphasised that the benefits should be distributed globally rather than concentrated in the hands of a few countries.
Xi urged for increased international cooperation in AI research, development, and regulation, stating that governments should collaborate to construct universally agreed global governance frameworks. He warned against technical monopolies and hurdles that could limit access to AI, stating that all countries should have equal possibilities to benefit from it.
Without specifically identifying the United States, Xi's words were widely seen as a critique of export controls and restrictions on China's access to advanced AI processors and semiconductor technologies. Beijing has often claimed that such policies stifle technological advancement and impede global innovation.
China has been speeding its AI goals by investing heavily in local chip manufacture, huge language models, and AI applications, while also encouraging international collaboration through forums such as the World Artificial Intelligence Conference.
His remarks coincide with the intensifying global rivalry for AI leadership, as major economies compete to create innovative AI technologies simultaneously discussing international regulations to control the risks and dangers presented by the quickly developing industry.
