LONDON: Britain's ruling Labour Party will officially confirm veteran politician Andy Burnham as its new leader and the country's next prime minister at a special conference on Friday. Due to Labour's overwhelming majority in parliament, the 56-year-old is set to replace Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street on Monday.
Burnham’s ascension comes just four weeks after he returned as an MP following a nine-year absence. Starmer announced his resignation on June 22 after facing intense pressure from disastrous local election results and a string of domestic policy controversies.
Nicknamed the "King of the North" for his successful mayoral tenure in Greater Manchester, Burnham faced no rivals for the leadership. He secured the nominations of 379 of Labour's 403 MPs, locking out any potential challengers.
As the UK’s seventh prime minister in a decade, Burnham promises to decentralize power and rewire the economy for ordinary working people. However, he will face severe challenges, including a tepid economy and high government borrowing costs.
