British School boy captures gymnastics gold
Manama : Hogo Brazier made a winning start at the Fifth School Mini Olympics, organized by the Bahrain Olympic Committee in cooperation with the Ministry of Education.
The British School student topped the boys competition with 12.275 points at the Bahrain Sports Federation for People with Disabilities gym in Riffa.
He was followed by runners-up Abdulla Nayef (Al Emam Al Gazali) and Elyas Hasan (Othman bin Affan), who respectively took the silver and bronze medals.
Other age groups winners were: Aya Adel (Capital School, 13.40 points) in the 7-9 years girls, Hajer Yasser (Sukayna bint Al Hussain, 13.925) in the 10-12 years girls, Yara Erfan (A. Rahman Kanoo, 13.825) 13-15 years girls, Abdulkarim Akram (Oqba bint Nafea, 10.7) 7-9 years boys and Mahmood Fadel (Al Emam Al Tabari, 12.425) in 10-12 years boys.
Volleyball
Elsewhere, Dar Kulaib ‘C’ notched the volleyball championship at the Bahrain Volleyball Association’s gym, located at Isa Sports City in Riffa. Teams were divided into four groups of four teams, with each group winners and runners-up reaching the quarter-finals knock-out stage.
Dar Kulaib emerged winners after a wing over Dar Kulaib ‘D’ team in the final. The latter settled for the silver medal, while Nabeeh Saleh ‘D’ took the bronze.
Cycling
In cycling, Ahmed Mohammed of Zallaq School took the primary boys race gold medal, finishing ahead of runner up Sayed Qassim Attiya of Duraz School.
Staged near the Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir, the cycling competition also included two more races for intermediate and secondary stages boys section.
In the intermediate stage, Ahmed Naji of the British School topped the race, followed by National Charter School’s Mohammed Al Wazzan and Hussain Mohammed of A’ali School in second and third places, respectively.
Shaikh Abdulla bin Isa School dominated the secondary stage race, winning all podium, as Mohammed Ebrahim took the gold medal, followed by runner up Ahmed Nasser and third-placer Jassim Mohammed.
Meanwhile, Bahrain Gymnastics Federation president Abdulla Al Dossary said the School Mini Olympics is a unique project that creates an athletic generation that is capable of competition for Bahrain at international championships.
Al Dossary stressed the endless efforts of HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, representative of His Majesty the King for Charity Works and Youth Affairs, Supreme Council for Youth and Sports Chairman, and BOC President, in the development of sports and taking it to higher standards.
On his part, Ministry of Education’s competition group section head Abdulla Al Abbasi said the ministry pays great attention to the School Mini Olympics, which is part of its commitments to motivate its students to exercise and prepare them to become the future heroes of Bahrain.
Al Abbasi affirmed the project as a supporter to school sports, and would contribute to the development of its athletes and compete for podium at regional and international championships.
