Bahrain athletes set for Solidarity Games

Manama : Bahrain has completed its preparations for the Fourth edition of the Islamic Solidarity Games, which takes place in Baku, Azerbaijan from May 12 to 22.

The nationals will compete in three sports – athletics, shooting and wrestling along with more than 4,000 athletes from 57 countries lined up for the 11-day games this year.

Supreme Council for Youth and Sports deputy general secretary and Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) general secretary Abdulrahman Askar is heading the kingdom’s delegation, which includes 38 athletes in three sports.

Bahrain delegation manager Fajer Jassim said the administrative team will be the first batch of the delegation due to leave with the remaining teams expected to depart over the coming few days.

She noted that the BOC has completed all arrangements to prepare for this edition of the games, which is regarded as one of the high priorities of the committee for having a variety of sports with prominent athletes from around the Islamic world taking part.

The competition includes gymnastics, athletics, basketball, football, boxing, swimming, handball, judo, karate, ping-pong, volleyball, wrestling, wushu, badminton, and taekwondo.

The first games were in 2005 in Saudi Arabia and aimed to emphasize Islamic unity and solidarity through sports. The fourth edition of the games will be launched with the motto ‘Journey from the Caspian’.

Bahrain delegation:

1) Athletics (Men): Kemarley Brown, Andrew Fisher, Yaqoob Salem, Ali Khamis, Abbas Abubaker, Abraham Rotich, Alsadik Maikhou, Linus Kiplagat, John Koech, Musa Isah, Abraham Cheroben, Aweke Yimer, Benson Seurei, Saeed Al Khaldi, Evans Chematot. 

2) (Women) Athletics: Hajar Al Khaldi, Iman Essa, Edidiong Odiong, Salwa Naser, Oluwakemi Adekoya, Marta Yota, Manal Elbahraoui, Tigist Belay, Dalila Gosa, Ruth Jebet, Shitaye Eshete, Rose Chelimo, Tigest Mekonen, Aminat Jamal, Noora Jasim, Bontu Rebitu.

3) Shooting: Fatema Nasralla, Latifa Al Hadi, Martam Hassani, Hassan Mohammed, Nasser Khalaf, Tammar Al Watt.

4) Wrestling: Adam Batirov (freestyle 70kg).
