Al Hekma, Kanoo win football openers

Manama : Al Hekma International School had a solid start to its campaign in the football tournament as part of the ongoing Fourth Mini Olympics.

The school dominated both the primary and intermediate girls stages of the competition, which got underway at the Bahrain Football Association grounds in Riffa, where the intermediate stage team registered a resounding 6-0 win over the Indian School in Group ‘A’ opening match and the primary stage team followed suit, beating the Indian School 5-0 in Group ‘A’ to kick-start their title bid on a high note.

Kanoo International School followed suit as they registered well-earned victories in the intermediate stage, beating New Millennium (10-0) and Al Hekma 3-2 to share the latter the lead in Group ‘A’ with two wins each.

Among the boys, Kanoo School had a flying start in the intermediate stage, beating Al Middle East School 3-0 in Group ‘A’ at Kanoo International School sport hall. In Group ‘B’, Hawar School were dominant, winning their both matches against Bangladesh School (3-1) and New Millennium School (1-0).

The 3-on-3 Basketball championships kicked off yesterday with intermediate boys and girls matches as Ibn Khuldoon ‘B’ registered the biggest result of the day, beating Ahlia School ‘B’ 13-0 at the Bahrain Sports for Disabilities Federation hall.

In the intermediate boys Group ‘A’ highlights, Middle East School ‘B’ scored a narrow 4-3 victory over Creativity School ‘A’ in a Group ‘D’ thriller staged at Um Al Hassam Basketball Hall.

In table tennis, Sayed Jaffer Ebrahim and Karan Rawal reached the intermediate stage boys final, beating Sayed Hasan Ebrahim 3-2 (-6, 6, 7, -3, 6) and Feroz M. 3-0 (11, 4, 6) respectively at the Bahrain Table Tennis Association hall.

Dharshini Soundra of the Indian School topped the intermediate girls stage with six points from three matches.

Action continues today with the finals of the table tennis primary and intermediate boys and girls divisions as well as the football and 3-on-3 basketball from 10am onwards.

A record 2,000 students from 42 government and private schools are taking part in this year’s Mini Olympics which will run until March 30 and organised by the Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) in cooperation with the Ministry of Education.

There are 14 sports events in total – football, 3-on-3 basketball, volleyball, handball, table tennis, athletics cricket, hockey, swimming, water sports, gymnastics, taekwondo, jiu jitsu and karting.
