Jaw centre vandalism, arson: 57 in the dock
Manama
Southern Governorate Chief Prosecutor, Muhanna Al-Shaiji, yesterday announced the completion of investigation into vandalism and arson that took place at Jaw Reformation and Rehabilitation Centre in May.
Fifty-seven individuals, including 51 prisoners, were charged and their cases were referred to the Higher Criminal Court. The court hearings will commence on July 23.
Investigation started following the submission of a report by the Jaw Centre to the Public Prosecution. The report cited acts of aggression against prison officers, damage to the centre’s property, and forcibly removing prison officers from the centre. The vandals reportedly caused damages worth BHD 508,178.
Public Prosecution also conducted investigations into the violence between inmates and prison officers, which resulted in a number of injuries. Forensic staff reviewed the injuries sustained by both prison officers and inmates.
The Public Prosecution later heard testimonies from 126 witnesses.
The Southern Governorate Chief Prosecutor noted the Ombudsman’s Office has received several allegations of mistreatment of prisoners, and that the Public Prosecution has referred these cases to the Special Investigation Unit for further review.
The Chief Prosecutor added criminal charges levelled against prisoners relate to the use of force against public officers, and deliberate efforts to disturb the peace. Charges also include attacking prison officers with sharp and deadly objects, as well as arson.
